Description: Emissions trading is a market-based approach for achieving environmental objectives. A cap and trade emissions trading scheme sets an overall limit on the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions that can be emitted from the emission sources covered by the scheme. Companies or sectors within the scheme receive or buy allowances which represent the right to emit a specific amount. The total amount of allowances distributed cannot exceed the cap, limiting total emissions to that level and hence guaranteeing the desired environmental outcome.
