Oil & Gas
Knowledge, Experience and a Globally Integrated Team

Surviving in today's oil and gas markets is a challenge. Competition for investment dollars is on the rise. International markets are filled with legal, political, social and economic risk. Regulation nuances at home are brought about by changes in security, environmental and energy policy. Issues involving structuring and risk allocation cannot be ignored. Innovative, non-recourse financing techniques are a must.

Our lawyers cover the full range of oil and gas transactions from upstream to downstream, including pipelines, liquefied natural gas (LNG), distribution networks, trading and petrochemicals. Whether it is development, mergers and acquisitions, privatizations, finance, tax, environmental or litigation work, our team is integrated globally and locally across practice areas to add value to any oil and gas transaction.

Baker & McKenzie's cross-border practice is a leader in multinational oil and gas pipelines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects. We help develop, finance and sell facilities. We bridge the gap between developed and developing countries' legal systems. Whether it's time charters, ship construction contracts, permits or consents for receiving terminals - our lawyers understand the complexities of oil and gas contracts and work with you to stay ahead of the curve.

Our recent transactions include:
  • Acting for an oil and gas company in relation to the sale and purchase of a number of oil and gas projects both onshore and offshore UK.
  • Acting for a European multilateral bank on its co-financing of the US$2.2 billion Chad/Cameroon oil pipeline project.
  • Acting for a Chinese Oil & Gas company in relation to a gas pipeline and LNG import terminals in China.
  • Acting in relation to the acquisition of the EcoElectrica Power Project and Penuelas LNG Terminal in Puerto Rico and the planned terminal and power plant expansion.
  • Acting for a US energy affiliate of a major international industrial group with respect to securing LNG supply from the liquefaction joint venture of a Middle Eastern NOC, securing regasification capacity in a US terminal, and contracting for transportation, marketing and sales of natural gas in the US.
