John Conroy
Biographical Notes
Career History
John Conroy was elected Chairman of the Executive Committee of Baker & McKenzie in October 2004.
 
He has been a partner in Chicago since 1987 and was elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the International Firm in 1998. The following year he was elected U.S. Managing Partner, and subsequently held the position of North American Managing Partner until October 2004.
 
Mr. Conroy has also held other significant management roles related to his areas of practice including Chair of the Global Banking & Finance Steering Committee, Chair of the Global Major Projects Steering Committee, and Chair of the North American Banking & Finance/Major Projects Practice Group.
 
Education and Bar Admittance
A resident of Chicago, Mr. Conroy was awarded an A.B., summa cum laude, and inducted into Phi Beta Kappa by the University of Notre Dame. Prior to law school, he completed graduate studies at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Européenes of the Université de Strasbourg in Strasbourg, France and at the Université Catholique de l'Ouest in Angers, France, with a fellowship from the Rotary Foundation.
 
He received his J.D. degree in 1979 from Northwestern University School of Law, where he was the Managing Editor of the Northwestern University Law Review. He served as a judicial law clerk to Justice Robert C. Underwood of the Illinois Supreme Court before joining Baker & McKenzie in 1980.
 
Legal Expertise
Mr. Conroy specializes in International Banking & Finance law and has extensive experience as counsel to a variety of financial institutions and intermediaries, which include:
  • banks, export credit agencies and multilateral financial institutions in cross-border credit facilities, securitization, project bond, leveraged leasing and other structured financings;
  • custodian and trustee banks in their global custody and asset management activities, as well as investment funds and insurance companies in their global securities lending activities; and
  • securities clearing agencies and exchanges, as well as depository trust companies, with respect to various cross-border investment services including securities settlement and collateral management programs.

Personal
John Conroy is married with seven children, four boys and three girls ages 7 to 21.
