Established in 1974, the composition of the Hong Kong office is a reflection of the city itself - an international community with a highly developed infrastructure, providing a bridge between China and the rest of the world. 

The Beijing office, which was officially established in 1993, has long been recognized as having the pre-eminent China practice. In addition to that, the PRC Ministry of Justice confirmed on December 16, 2002, its approval for the opening of the Shanghai office of Baker & McKenzie. The Shanghai office allows us to better meet the increasing demands of our domestic and international clients in relation to international legal issues.

Staffed by locally qualified lawyers and local consultants conversant with the systems, practicalities, and language of law both in Hong Kong and the mainland, all three offices are well established as 'local' firms as well as international legal advisers. The Firm's in-depth local knowledge and extensive web of relationships in China, coupled with our global capabilities, ensure that our clients receive first-class support for their China business activities.

Testament to our acknowledged expertise, we were one of the first foreign law firms to represent the Chinese government in foreign legal proceedings. Our long-standing involvement in China has allowed us to become a highly respected and recognized legal advisor to central and local governmental bodies in China. In 2001, the Legislative Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress invited our then-Chairman, Christine Lagarde, and a multi-country delegation of our attorneys to advise on a platform of legislative reforms that China plans to institute as part of its WTO commitments. More recently, our Chairman participated in the International Business Leaders Advisory Council meetings organised by the Beijing Mayor's office.

Baker & McKenzie is also a member of Community Business, the members of which officially launched the Hong Kong Corporate Social Responsibility Charter on 26 September, 2005. Business leaders from 23 leading Hong Kong companies, including Baker & McKenzie, signed the Charter agreeing to support and advance leadership on CSR by incorporating it into their organisational strategies and operations related to the workplace, market place and the community. Through our involvement with Community Business, we seek to further align and expand on our existing CSR efforts.
